Why do we study Plato, Aristotle and Descartes when everything they said was nonsense?

Everything? A hell of a lot of it was interesting and it shaped the history of the Western world and underlies many assumptions and metaphors we still use today. I'd rather read them than any philosopher from the last 100 years.
